10th Grade English: “My Manzanar” Project

“My Manzanar” is an annual project where 10th grade students empathize and research the historical events preceding World War II and its effects on the Japanese-American community in the Los Angeles area. Students in Ms. Nguyen’s English 10 class first read the book Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. The memoir follows a young girl from Los Angeles who was forced to lived at the internment camp with her family for three years. The culmination of this project takes place at the Manzanar Historical Site.

Students made the exact same pilgrimage from Los Angeles to Manzanar as the author of the book. Students got to tour and explore the internment camp where Japanese-American citizens were forced to live many years ago.
