Mr. Van

About Me

My name is Mr. Van and I am excited to be working as a Speech and Journalism teacher at Mann UCLA community school. Education is my passion. While I am skilled in multiple subjects, English language, writing, reading, and ESL are my specialties. Language is a tool that is used to connect us and helping students gain the skills and confidence in their advanced reading and writing abilities is one of the activities that brings me the most satisfaction.

I have spent the bulk of my 15 years of teaching in the field of English. I started my teaching career in Taiwan in 2004 and taught on the island until 2011. While there, I taught both ESL and English Language Arts from the elementary school level through high school. and After I left Taiwan, I obtained an MA in TESOL with a focus in reading strategies, writing instruction, and other techniques to help learners of all backgrounds. This training also included: curriculum development, lesson planning, and extensive workshop design. I am also quite familiar with ELD and common core standards.
